Converting Virtual Hard Disks between different Hypervisor

Twitter is an awesome social media tool to get the most recent IT news. During this week I saw a tweet by Ben Armstrong recommending a very nice tool for converting virtual hard disks.

Honestly I have to say that I have been waiting for such a handy tool for a long time running on Windows. I mean there are a lot of solutions in the market that are providing the same functionality. But only between a limited number of hypervisor and virtualization solutions.

The QEMU disk image utility supports the following hypervisor and virtualization solutions.

  • Hyper-V
  • VMware
  • KVM
  • Xen
  • VirtualBox

Another advantage of the QEMU disk image utility is the small size and the fact that this tool is made for the command line. Especially for me the tool is a huge time saver because I’m running Hyper-V, VMware test environments and sometimes VirtualBox. For each solution I want to use the default virtual hard disk format and now I have the solution for my conversion tasks.
